Our Approach
Black Spruce Guide offers guided hunts for whitetail deer, black bear, and turkey across the vast Adirondack region of New York. We provide immersive backcountry camping for both novice and experienced hunters, focusing on time-tested woodsman skills and deep respect for the rugged terrain we roam.
Our Camp
Your stay will be simple and honest. We start early with the sunrise and end late with stories around the fire. Expect hard work, hearty food, and a crackling fire to cut the chill. Between the cozy tents and the quiet of the Adirondacks, it is a place to settle in, sharpen your skills, and find your rhythm in the wild.
The Way We Hunt Here
Chart Your Course. I study topographic maps, tracing high ridges and low draws to pinpoint where deer feed and bed. By reading the thickets and travel corridors, I can set us up for a smart, patient hunt that respects the logic of the mountain and the changing season.
Pack for the Peaks. I rely on simple, proven gear and wool layers to handle the Adirondacks' sudden turns in weather. Every tool I carry must earn its weight through utility and resilience.
Learn the Land. I track sign and monitor mast crops, browse lines, and clear-cuts to see where animals feed. By walking these edges and timber lines, I uncover the hidden patterns they use to stay safe and navigate the terrain.
Finish Well. I aim for clean shots and careful recovery out of respect for the game. Back at camp, I take quiet time to reflect on what the woods showed me.
Observations from Time Afield
Most of my time is spent outside, moving through this timber and paying attention to small things—tracks in a skid road, a fresh rub line, how wind lays across a ridge.
